Lesson 12 of 12

📊 Data & Graphs

🎯 3rd Grade ⏱ ~25 minutes 🏆 Final Lesson

What You'll Learn

  • Read and interpret a bar graph
  • Answer questions using data: most, fewest, difference, total
  • Understand tally marks and how data is collected

What Is Data?

Data is information we collect and organize. We use graphs to make data easy to understand at a glance.

A bar graph uses bars of different heights to show amounts. The taller the bar, the bigger the number.

💡
Four Questions for Any Graph

1. Which has the most? → tallest bar
2. Which has the fewest? → shortest bar
3. How many more/fewer? → subtract the two bars
4. Total? → add all the bars together

Tally Marks

Before making a graph, we collect data using tally marks:

  • Each mark = 1 vote or item
  • Every 5th mark crosses the others: ||||͡— = 5
  • This makes counting fast: groups of 5!

Use the interactive bar graph below. Answer questions about the data, then try a new graph!
