K–2 Math · Lesson 1 of 8
Lesson 1: What Is a Number?
Numbers are everywhere! We use them to count things, measure sizes, and tell time. Let's learn what numbers mean and why they matter.
Key Concepts
Numbers Count Things
A number tells you how many of something there are. 1 apple, 3 dogs, 5 stars — the number tells you exactly how many!
Zero Is a Number Too!
Zero means none at all. If you eat all your cookies, you have zero cookies left. Zero is a very important number!
Numbers Have Order
Numbers go in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... Each number is one more than the one before it. That order never changes!
🆕 Activity: Dot Counter
Click the dots to count them! Each dot you click lights up and the number goes up by one.
