Lesson 6: Environmental Engineering

⏱ ~20 min Lesson 6 of 7 💚 Free

Environmental engineers solve some of the world's most important problems: clean water, clean air, renewable energy, and waste reduction. Technology and engineering are our most powerful tools for protecting the planet.

Key Concepts

Water Treatment

Clean water does not just happen — it is engineered. Water treatment plants filter out particles, remove bacteria with chlorine or UV light, and test water quality continuously. Engineering makes safe drinking water possible for billions of people.

Renewable Energy

Solar panels convert sunlight to electricity. Wind turbines convert wind to electricity. Both are now cheaper than coal per unit of energy produced. Engineers are designing better batteries to store this energy for when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — Engineering Solutions

Landfills produce methane (a powerful greenhouse gas). Engineers design systems to capture that methane for energy. They design better recycling systems, biodegradable materials, and circular economy products where everything is designed to be reused.
