Lesson 6: Design Your Own: Engineering Challenge
You have learned the design process, forces, simple machines, structures, and gears. Now it is your turn to be the engineer! Work through a full design challenge from problem to solution.
Key Concepts
Define the Problem Clearly
The most important step is understanding exactly what problem you are solving. A vague problem leads to a vague solution. 'Make something that moves' is too vague. 'Move a 1kg box up a 30cm ramp using only a lever' is specific.
Multiple Solutions
There is rarely one right answer in engineering. A good engineer considers several possible solutions, lists the pros and cons of each, and picks the best one for the situation. The best solution depends on the constraints: cost, materials, time, and safety.
Document and Share
Real engineers write down everything — sketches, calculations, decisions, failures. Documentation lets others build on your work and lets you remember what you tried. Always write down your design!
