Lesson 4 of 10
🐶 Animals & Habitats
What You'll Learn
- Define a habitat and explain what makes one suitable
- Match animals to their correct habitats
- Understand adaptations — features that help animals survive
What Is a Habitat?
A habitat is the natural home of an animal — the place where it finds food, water, shelter, and space. Every habitat has specific conditions like temperature, moisture, and types of food available.
Major habitat types:
- 🌿 Forest — dense trees, moderate climate; home to deer, owls, foxes
- 🌳 Desert — hot, dry; home to camels, rattlesnakes, roadrunners
- 🌊 Ocean — saltwater; home to sharks, dolphins, octopuses
- 🦀 Arctic/Tundra — freezing, little sunlight; home to polar bears, penguins, Arctic foxes
- 🍏 Rainforest — warm, wet, hugely diverse; home to toucans, jaguars, tree frogs
- 🌵 Grassland — wide open, seasonal rain; home to bison, lions, meerkats
Adaptations
An adaptation is a body feature or behavior that helps an animal survive in its habitat.
- 🦀 Polar bears have thick fur and fat to survive freezing temperatures
- 🌺 Cacti store water in their stems to survive droughts (yes, plants have adaptations too!)
- 🦀 Arctic foxes turn white in winter for camouflage in snow
- 🐟 Fish have gills to breathe underwater
